March Reading Goals: Stories That Nourish, Inspire & Bloom

March Reading Goals: Stories That Nourish, Inspire & Bloom

March is a season of fresh starts.

The days get a little longer. The flowers begin to bloom. And it feels like the perfect time to refresh our bookshelves with stories that nourish young minds and celebrate the beauty of our diverse world.

At Stories of a Colorful World, we believe reading should do more than build skills. It should build confidence. It should spark curiosity. It should affirm identity. And it should remind every child that their story matters.

This month, we’re inviting families, educators, and community members to join our March Reading Challenge — a joyful journey centered on women’s history, cultural exploration, healthy habits, and the magic of spring.

Here’s what we’re reading this month:

Women’s History Wonders

March is Women’s History Month,  the perfect opportunity to introduce children to remarkable women who shaped history and continue to change the world.

This month, we encourage you to:

  • Read a book that celebrates remarkable women throughout history.

  • Choose a story with a strong female protagonist.

  • Explore an inspirational book about girls making change today.

After reading, ask:

  • What challenges did she overcome?

  • How did she use her voice?

  • What’s one thing you can do to make the world better?

When children see women, especially Black, Brown, and underrepresented women—leading, innovating, and dreaming boldly, it expands what they believe is possible for themselves.

Nutritional Nourishment

Food connects us to culture, family, and community.

This month, explore stories that celebrate:

  • Healthy eating habits

  • Cultural food traditions

  • Characters learning to try new foods

Take it one step further: Cook a simple, nutritious meal together inspired by a book you read. Talk about flavors, traditions, and memories connected to food.

Reading about different cultures through food helps children build empathy and appreciation for traditions beyond their own — powerful “windows” into other lived experiences.

Springtime Story Garden

Spring is officially here, and what better way to celebrate than with books?

Try:

  • Revamping your reading nook with a touch of spring

  • Reading a book that celebrates the arrival of the season

  • Planting seeds or creating a mini indoor garden inspired by a story

You can even decorate an egg inspired by a favorite book character and share your creation using #SOCWreadingchallenge.

Reading doesn’t just happen on couches. It can happen in gardens, kitchens, parks, and around the dinner table.

Windows, Mirrors & Representation

At Stories of a Colorful World, we talk often about windows and mirrors.

  • Mirrors reflect a child’s identity back to them.

  • Windows allow children to see and understand lives different from their own.

Both are essential.

This month’s challenge is designed to intentionally include both — stories that affirm who children are and stories that expand how they see the world.

When children grow up surrounded by diverse books, they develop empathy, confidence, and a deeper understanding of community.

Make Reading a Family Celebration

At the end of the month, gather around the table and talk about:

  • Your favorite book from the challenge

  • A character you connected with

  • Something new you learned

Reading doesn’t have to feel like homework. It can feel like a connection.

To make this challenge even more fun, we’ve included a special coloring sheet where kids can mark off each reading goal they complete. Download and print your copy, then share your progress with us on social media!
